This changed when Her Majesty The Queen Mother became its Commandant-in-Chief in August 1939 to honour its Auxilliary Territorial Sevice in the armed forces. Due to its excellent performance between 1939-1945, the Women's Royal Army Corps emerged as a permanent military unit on February 1, 1949. In the centre of the officers badge is a lioness rampant (ready to do battle) facing left (ready for action) surrounded with a laurel wreath representing contenuity and a crown which represents Royal recognition for its outstanding service to the country..

HORSE BRASS: SHAKESPEARE/PERSONALITIES COLLECTION: Rabbie Burns Robert Burns (1759-1796) is also known as Rabbie Burns and in Scotland, "The Bard." He is regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is registered as a pioneer of the Romantic movement. He grew up in poverty and hardship after his father sold the family home that he had built, Burns Cottage, (when Rabbie was seven years old) and moved the family to a farm where they became common laborers. He had little formal schooling and was taught reading, writing and math at home by his father. The hard life of manual labor on the farm may have left him with a premature stoop, but his writing became an inspiration to the founders of both "liberalism" and "socialism."
A larger than life monument to Rabbie Burns was built along the sidewalk in Edinburgh...appropriately near major galleries and the castle.

HORSE BRASS: SHAKESPEARE/PERSONALITIES COLLECTION: Shakespeare. William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon. During his youth he became well known to the local sheriff for poaching wild game on neighboring property. His father rented-out a room upstairs in their home to a meat-cutter who was to train young William to beome a butcher. This training came to an end when the meat-cutter gave up in disgust as his pupil paid little interest to instruction and would act and quote lines out loud that he had written, instead of paying attention to his meat cutting. At the age of 18 he married Anne Hathaway who lived nearby. It has been reported that this was a "shotgun wedding" demanded by her father when he found out she was pregnant. She gave birth to three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Between 1585 and 1592 William Shakespeare began his career as an actor, writer, and part owner of a playing company titled Lord Chamberlain's Men. Later the company was renamed The king's Men. He retired to Stratford around 1613 where he died three years later.

HORSE BRASS: SPECIAL INTEREST/MYTH/SUPERSTITION COLLECTION: Acorn and Leaf The mighty English Oak deserves special recognition as it saved the life of the Monarch. I believe it was King Charles who disengaged from his horse as it passed under an oak tree while he was being pursued by a highwayman. His horse continued to run and the unsuspecting highwayman continued the hunt, while the King hid in the tree until danger had passed. The oak was also instrumental in the building of the powerful British fleet that made the Empire possible. It also served as an important building material through the Tudor era as it weathers the ages without fault. What would England have become without the mighty oak/the acorn?
